X’U
X’U stands for Ksenia. She just became mother and I interviewed her for DC.
J: How did you start and how did you get where you are know? (this was my first question-really appropriate now that I know that Ksenia just gave birth to a new and very different project
X: I made my first dress when I was a teenager, because I couldn’t find what I want in Kyiv’s shops. I remember that in Ukraine that time all shoes were black or brown and all clothes were equally boring. But when you are fifteen and dreaming to become a filmdirector you need more colours, shapes and concepts. So I started make clothes for me and my friends without thinking to become a fashion designer. I wasn`t interested in fashion, i love art, cinema, music and parties. But at the age of 19 I took part in fashion contest and won a contract with one of Kyiv`s fashion house. After having our show at Ukrainian Fashion week I recognized that I have energy and desire to work by myself, so I started my brand X’U and went to study to Kyiv University of Art and Design. But I had not enough time to study – I was fascinated by X’U collections and fashion shows. So that`s why I can say that I am a self-made designer. Everything I know I`ve learned through my own mistakes and I`m happy. Now I think more about harmony and hidden beauty, I like when something spectacular sought by small funds, I like to make more than clothes. I work intensevly with Ukrainian art scene, I love to collaborate with artists and produce a new perspective on the world.
I love also her intsallations and “not-only-fashion” projects I found in the portfolio she sent me…. will her baby play with the masks or the washing mashines? I’ll ask her next season.
