URBAN COUTURE: ANNA SMIT
Author at Style.com Nicole Phelps called it Urban Couture. This has been the trend for the past two seasons now, including the Spring Summer 2012 collections. It was picked up by many established brands and designers and for certainly will be picked up by high street as well as emerging designers.
The best example of this now well-known concept is Balenciaga. Nicolas Ghesquière has gone back to the Mid-Century designs of Cristobal to find the way in between traditional haute couture and ways to make it daily. So here we are with another talent from the Netherlands with edge for a fashion understanding. Anna Smit has strong silhouettes yet simply enough a Jil Sander touch. For her simplicity is a fundamental element in fashion design and in patterning, cutting and detailing. The urban couture concept was adopted by an amazing designer; Anna Smit who graduated the Royal College of Art in MA Fashion Womenswear design after finishing her BA degree in the Netherlands. She won the Marks & Spencer competition and granted a capsule collection that was launched in September for the London Fashion Week. Her designs are visually very effective because of the tailoring and the well defined silhouettes created by the outer skirts of the jackets, the shoulder of the manteau. Certainly Anna Smit will be much appreciated for bringing couture in to daylight!
