Secret Sketchbook of an Android
Just as the caterpillar turns into the beautiful butterfly, metamorphosis begins. The complex, unorganized alter self becomes an even more complex being. The id being transformed into the android as Duygu Ebcim, a fashion talent would argue, only to jumble the sleek line between the conscious and the unconscious into fashion.
I managed to steal her sketchbook only to take a peek at what she has been up to lately. Duygu a.k.a D’CIM is a young fashion designer who is soon to be graduated from London College of Fashion Womenswear BA after studying economics at University of Istanbul. As the teeny tiny caterpillar she transformed into a fashion loving, designing, creative mania not only to be different but to make different than most. The inspiration of her sketchbook came from Sigmund Freud’s formulation of id and android. According to Freud the id is the unorganised part of the personality simply seeking to avoid pain whereas the transformed android is a robot designed to look or act like human. D’CIM’s designs show the perfect balance of this motion not only through the concept but also the garments used, namely; fiber and tulle. She wanted to emphasize the metamorphosis via fiber especially, due to the unfinished nature of the garment which adds to the concept of the state of continuity of the metamorphosis. The spinning and the twirling of the garments form the most precious designs, the most complex and different styles for the fashionistas who love them, off the top of my head; myself! The all-so transformable jacket / bag catches attention in particular. The use of transformability and adaptability started being applied in fashion after Lucy Orta’s tent jacket. This move will blast in the next decade or so I can promise that! So pack your multi purpose bag- luggage- shoe- fashion make up kit -in one and stroll down the street. The multi-purpose and flexible jackets surely fulfills the sci-fi story and fits the next generation, more evolved androids. They will look more and more like us, walking amongst us, wearing what we wear and being who we are. Surely, D’CIM will be leading the bunch and she shines amongst the younger fashion generation with her utmost forward vision. She has to be on the ‘must watch’ list for sure, you can never know who the next Giles Deacon will be!
