Think of a pair of designers, the English “Edward Meadham” and the French born “Benjamin Kirchhoff”, both graduated from Central Saint Martins, now try to imagine the creative mix that can come out from this union, if you’re curious, here we are with: Meadham Kirchhoff. Two designers that have won the Emerging Talent-Ready-to-Wear award at the British Fashion Awards 2010. The definition of their style distinguishes them in their ‘modus operandi’; they believe in the design aesthetic as a corruption of classic garments, re-considering the values of banality in contemporary culture. As I dare say “Yes indeed”, as well as the corruption of classic garments I see here a total revolution of what was once considered elegant and feminine, changing the values by breaking every rule. A style with an apparent nonchalance, with the projection of a new intelligent and melancholic woman. This is what the duo have conceived and what they aim to contribute in the fashion universe. What I love most of their collection is the freedom in putting layers and layers of garments together, most of which are handcrafted and hand painted; new lines and shapes are created although maintaining a comfortable wearability of the garments all made in silk and other fabrics; some outfits can certainly appear a little weird, at first I thought they were Japanese, an impression that came from the vision of the blossom of colours and overlaps, a mess of things with different styles. I think though that each outfit features a wearable item with such details that enriches in a very original and genuine way your way to dress, a new language is born. My favourite group is the one with graphic cutouts; I’m a graphic designer after all and I love all that texture placed on unexpected parts of the dresses. At first I believed that the cutouts had been made by laser, but then I read they were hand-cut, with hand-embroidered black edging. Amazing details which are part of their signature style.
