Kostas Murkudis

Kostas Murkudis is of greek decent, was born in Dresden and now lives and works in Berlin. He worked as first design assistant to Helmut Lang for seven years before launching his own line in 1994, and was creative director of New York Industrie from 2000-2003, as well as Burlington menswear from 2005-2006. Next to producing KOSTAS MURKUDIS womenswear, he constantly works on a number of consultations to prestigious brands.
Since lately I am making a lot of research about swimwear and technical fabrics, I was particularly struck by his SS12 collection which is actually pretty full of this kind of fabrics, a kind of fusion between swimsuits and lingerie. Eurojersey offered him some new fabrics to work with – ranging from the very delicate to bonded jerseys in different weights made for swimming. Some were laser-printed with calligraphic Japanese rain-camouflage inspired patterns, born from a collaboration with the artist Carsten Nicolai. Through the use of these materials, Murkudis wanted to stress the fluidity and movements of the body.
And one thing that I loved was that Murkudis is one of those designers who doesn’t make a mistery of his inspirations. In an interview he said: Lately I’ve been getting more and more into music from the ’70s and ’80s, but I was also listening to the Eels’ album Tomorrow Morning when I was creating this collection. I like the mood and general feeling of that album very much. There’s this one song, “Spectacular Girl,” and in the video you see a lady who works in an office go into the elevator and strip down to her slip. She has a big bag with a huge gun in it that she starts putting together and then she shoots a guy. I thought it was so cool. (Read the full interview here)
Well I had a look at it and thought it was cool too, and it got me to understand his collection a little more. But the video I liked the most was the one on his website, made for SS10 collection. Look at it and catch the detail in the end… superb!
