KFD and the BLOGGERS’ CONTEST presented by Daria Shapovalova

Last season I wrote a lot about Kiev Fashion Days, where DC was invited to hold a conference about bloggin. This years’ edition was bigger and better, and I have prepared an interview with founder Daria Shapovalova, (HERE IN PICTURES BY MATT IRWIN) who also runs a tv program about fashion in Ukraine.

-Daria you already have your own tv program and you started a fashion week project: how did everything start?

All my projects have started from my passion and love for fashion. From my very early childhood I had a strong interest for it: my mom had a couple of books on the history of costumes, which I thoroughly studied. My first initiative was my TV-program. I have started it 3 years ago on a small Ukrainian TV-station. Now it is broadcast on several stations(including one international via satellite) and our audience is growing season after season. Kiev Fashion Days was an inevitable project for me, as my big goal is to build a proper environment for young and creative talents in Ukraine. I think our country has a very good potential, but we need to be more open and European-oriented.

-What is changing and what was the fashion system in Ukraine?

Within three recent years our fashion system did a huge leap. I don’t think any other European country survived so many changes within such a short period of time. First of all, the whole new generation of Ukrainian designers stood out: they are strong, diligent, self-confident and what is more important – they want to build the brand rather than work as an atelier (it is a huge problem in a Post- soviet countries, when designers make money on working only with private clients). Secondly, despite of the crisis, two international fashion-magazines had launched: Marie Claire and Harper’s Bazaar. And of course, the rise and success of Kiev Fashion Days marked a new step for Ukrainian Fashion Industry: now we have an event which attracts fashion-professionals all over the world to Kiev.

-how does the public in Ukraine respond variously to these two different media (tv and events)?

Our audience for the Kiev Fashion Days and for my program intersects.

Therefore, I can’t say there is a big difference in a response we receive for this two projects. Moreover, we actively use Facebook for promoting all our initiatives – our pages FashionWeekWithDariaShapovalova, KFD, TOP10 are in the list of the most successful pages in Ukrainian Facebook. That is why we understand the reaction of our audience very quickly.
