Scandinavian Fashion: GAIA
As I was looking for something inspirational I found a knitwear designer from Central Saint Martins College who has a tad bit different approach than others. Gaia Brandt Rasmussen, the Copenhagen based designer opened her brand GAIA in 2009.
All the pieces in her collection are hand made and the silhouettes are retro-ish. They do not carry the modern approach of knitwear in combining ultra-modern structures with the soft, grandmother reminiscent material. On the contrary, her designs are well established, lady like yet, androgynous in the same body. The androgynous feel is seen through the structures and the volumes of the designs. They do not highlight the curves of the body. The designs are neither embellished, nor understated. Her designs combine the main material; knit with vintage garments which adds to the retro-ish feel to the collection.
Another thing that intrigued me visiting her website is how much she cares about inspiration. Sharing her inspiration mood board with her followers in order to highlight the importance of it is a big plus. On her site she explained it by: “Inspiration for this expression can be found in many places in our everyday lives, but also from the world of art. The visual tension between illusion and reality, and how these works in context.” She is inspired really by anything such as an old retro car, a landscape, a photo of Liza Minnelli covered in red or even bunnies in dresses.
Gaia Brandt Rasmussen carries the sense of humour of Britain yet stays true to the Scandinavian fashion.
