Painting Fashion @ Berlin Collect – March 2011 from Fier Management on Vimeo.

… Oh, yes, I’m going to bore you with all the faboulous brands I saw in Paris during the fashion week for many, many other posts!

But “bore” is a word that can’t be linked in any case to the work of Howitzweissbach!

I met the designers, Eva Howitz and Frieder Weissbach, at their stand in Rendez-Vous Showroom.
They are a young, international fashion label from Leipzig, Germany, with a distinct approach to cut, material and colour, and an unmistakably individual and independent style.

Their inspirations mostly come from art, music, architecture and social events. Contacts to the internationally acclaimed art and graphics scene in Leipzig, memories of life in the German Democratic Republic and Eastern-European imagery are their main influences. But when I saw their vividly colorful and geometric creations, I immediately thought about Russian constructivism costumes (Liubov Popova, Varvana Stepanova…) and Sonia Delaunay dresses back in the 30s.

Since I became fan of Howitzweissbach on Facebook, I saw the pictures of what looks like a great performance they put on lately, together with other designers involved in the project Berlin Collect (Blame and Lena Hasibether). The project was about expressing fashion through art with the re-enactment of a series of paintings at the Dam Stuhltrager Berlin Gallery. The closing event, held some days ago, was open to anyone to join: you had the chance to wear the designers’ clothes to recreate and reinterpret some of the most memorable paintings in the history of art under the direction of photographer Javier Chiocchio and filmed by Ignacio Linares.

Howitzweissbach prepared a “dinner” made of super colorful jellies, which perfectly express their aesthetic values, and the buffet was used as a set to re-create Leonardo da Vinci “Last Supper”. Wonderful!

I really hope I’ll join their next events.
