Design Catwalk loves… David Koma

David Koma is a young designer whose creations I first saw at Luisa Via Roma: super sculptural dresses with a structural use of metallic zippers, used to build the garment rather than with the usual functional use.
The Georgian born fashion designer graduated in March 2009 with a distinction in MA Fashion from Central Saint Martins.
His graduate collection of sculptural, body-concious dresses embellished with metal tubes and multicoloured chains won Harrods Design Award and got a lot of press coverage.
The inspiration for his last collection comes from the futuristic shapes of Fortunato Depero and Umberto Boccioni, along with the first works of Geoffrey Beene.
Currently he’s working on S/S 2011, but his biggest dream would be to become creative director of Thierry Mugler, a singular choiche that in my opinion would surely suit Koma’s taste.
