If you write about menswear is very common to take for granted many details. Unfortunately, unlike the women catwalks, the menswear dare not so much on creating new structures of dressing. While most fashion shows are just showcasing beautiful but somehow classic lines, with parades of collections that remind me something I’ve just seen in years, there are also few stunning surprises.
I’m going to introduce to you one of my favorite menswear brand, it’s likewise a refreshing to see a designer like: JUUN.J. A graduate of Esmod Seoul in 1992 he has started his career as a designer for Chiffons. In his own collection, the designer likes to create new silhouettes and garments with an overlapping of pieces creating a spectacular tension between them.
I really love the whole collection, I find JUUN.J closer to an artist than a fashion designer. His work is defined by a layering process that makes his pieces similar to sculptures; every garment is built with unusual volumes, furthermore his graphics solutions create gorgeous geometric shapes made of leather and wool’s patches.

It’s official, I’m completely fond of fashion/art/inspirational movies, the first post of 2012 aims to celebrate my passion for everything that is cinematographic and fashion related. I’ve realized different videos in the last two years, it was very challenging meeting people and learning to know their vision of the world through lenses and sophisticated cameras; I can admit that the latest team I worked with was the best I’ve ever collaborated so far.
On a shooting set, especially under tight schedules, It’s not easy to understand what a person has in mind at once, you need someone who understands you right away and this entails a perfect connection between the team or the same level of experience and talent. I want to be sincere, I had also some disappointments in the first part of the year with people I believed in and who were not able of human decency worried like they were only of trampling on people; but it’s always better leaving the past in the past and remembering only the good stuff one has received. For this reason I suggest to young artists to believe in what they feel and trying to be always very honest, with yourself, in your work and with others; believe me, you never know what destiny have in store for you, and fate delivers always its promises.
So in order to be focus on the good experience, I want to thank Hunter Magazine for being the kindest professionals I met the last year, when the talent is not afraid of nothing because aware of itself. The other guy I want to thank is Marco Puccini, a very sweet and talented illustrator and video artist who read my mind and often understood things I wanted, sometimes even unknown to me. I have, like everyone of course, made good intentions for 2012, my desires foresee the purchase of a camera for starting to film by myself, learning french and starting with my graphic personal art work; we will see later this year which of these premises I will be able to realize. The following videos are some stunning creations with very gentle touch from young video makers, I loved the three styles that show how it’s not about the camera but the heart that beat behind it, the concept; I put only one I created with Marco just to show you what we’ve realized.
Let the talent bloom and what you have inside appearing!

Recently I read an article talking about the human influence on landscapes as seen by Google Earth. The article stressed how much more evident is the intervention of the man on nature, if seen through this media, as exemplified by a photo depicting the border between fields and virgin forest in Brazil. That was impressive, but more than making me think about how sustainable we are, I have to admit I was struck by the beauty of some of those images, that looked like beautiful abstract compositions.

When there’s talent there is no need to say too much, the work of the artist speaks for itself. Although I didn’t run out of words at all, I let you judge what I found this morning by yourself. As soon as I saw these photos I got almost overwhelmed by the colors and work of the photographer and film maker Erik Madigan Heck.
Following the latest shots realized for Kenzo and Mary Katrantzou. The colors are amazing, stunning poses and the whole concept is really consistent both in the chromatic choice than in the digital effects. There’s elegance and gentleness in the models poses, they are surrounded by an invisible aura. Definitely a talent to watch.

Growing next to one of the most famous French illustrators (Pierre Le-Tan) has certainly shaped the life of Olympia Le Tan, she grew up in a house full of books with beautiful covers of forties and fifties. In 2009 she launched her first collection of clutches, where original bags were created by drawing inspirations from famous books. Olympia has met director Spike Jonze who directed a fabulous short film “Mourir Auprès de Toi”, that has been shot in my favorite bookstore in Paris “Shakespeare & Co”. The story tells of a romance between a skeleton escaped from “Macbeth” and Mina of “Dracula” with a “grand final” here presented in two different covers ending.
I really like her way to picture book covers with felt, the result is brilliant both in color choices than in the lettering embroidery ; the milk bags are incredibly hilarious. But the covers represents in my opinion her most interesting work, maybe because I love reading, or just because is funny to mix fashion and literature. Olympia’s debut collection was an instant success and her winter collection has another curious name ‘Housewives Choice’, which seems to be based on her own life. Among other things Olympia’s past is full of fashion experiences, she worked with Giles Dufour at Chanel Studio who she followed also to Balmain, but here happened a curious thing, the Maison did not like very much their t-shirt reading “Balmain Bitch” worn by Claudia Shiffer, and decided to make them both fired; but after this misadventure she launched her own collection.
Olympia is also a talented DJ, she was the sound designer at renowned nightclub in Paris Le Baron, and DJ for Kirsten Dunst, Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga and Purple Magazine parties. My favorite bag is the “The door of Perception” of Aldous Huxley , even if the book I love more from this author is Brave New World, but maybe we can ask Olympia to enrich her library.

Each White Fashion Show, during the Milan Fashion week, we find a lot of new products and ideas to write about. The team of Design Catwalk in that period is scattered throughout the world for both business and personal research, it is the second time that we are invited to the Paris fashion week. But this time it was clearly a disappointment not to be able to go to the marvellous French city because I must admit that Milan has given his best to create a different fashion environment, so cool that even Anna Wintour made some shocking revelation about our prime minister, perhaps on seeing a nation with so much talent but so poorly administered.

The story is about a rabbit that was run over by a car when it was crossing a road at night. When it stands up with its intestines in the paws, it realises that is is the Easter Bunny. We follow the bunny from the accident to the hospital where it was patched together and then to the white forest. My idea was to create a feeling that was macabre and cute at the same time. This is how the Danish designer Kim Traeger, BA 2011 at Central Saint Martins, explains the concept of her graduation collection.

Some days i wear nothing on the outside because there is too much on the inside. Here is the SEE THROUGH – TRANSPARENCIES trend mercilessly hunted in the spring/summer 2012 catwalks jungle.
A playful trend continuously found on the latest catwalks worldwide that brings to the surface the inner contents over the bodies, some with several layers, or as second skins, used shamelessly. PVC, metallic yarns, organic fabrics all linked by this highly shiny, light, cellophane like, obviously sexy characteristic; printed, colored, but always transparent and always revealing.

Of course Anderson interpretation of naturalism is presented in a very personal way and some of the designer assertions explain his fashion manifesto very well: “we don’t have to let the fantastical ideals of youth collapse into the mundane realities of adulthood”. Why should we? Anderson thoughts are related to a vision where things can be borrowed from a man to a woman and from a woman to a man, with no borders between the masculine and the feminine wardrobe.

Cathy Edwards from Central Saint Martins knows who is made for fashion and who’s not, the parade of MA graduates brought more of a talent. Probably over the latest years is quite common that the name Phoebe corrisponds to a great talent for fashion (Phoebe Philo = Celine), Phoebe English looks set to this, she won the L’Oreal Professionel Creative and she worked on a project with a very original and unique concept: hair and dark women. Phoebe created a catwalk full of floating figures where the hair appear and disappear according to the body movement, revealing glimpses

Construction is the result of intense study, because the body and its movements are not abstract concepts for Manuela Arcari. The infinite possibilities of this modular style highlight the personality of the wearer, not the ego of the designer. The tone is concentrated, rarefied at times, yet, between the folds, the clean cuts and the geometries, one can discover memories and emotions. Simplicity, after all, is complex, full of nuances.

I don’t know if fashion should be taken seriously, the thing I know is that this duo of designers is not kidding at all, at least when it comes to style. Agape Mdumulla and Sam Cotton (the surname could be defined in Latin as “nomen omen”, your name is your destiny) are two guys very skilled, they collaborated for international guru of fashion such as Karl Lagerfield, Alexander McQueen and many others. Their collections are very avant-garde in the style, in the lines and in the approach to fashion, maybe they are a signal that something is changing (…)

Domique Masullo does special items that are not designed for a “target, but better designed for a life they can fit in and make more beautiful and comfortable, as he says himself: “I don’t believe so much in barriers related to gender neither age, nor what’s home wear or outwear. I want to create a fashion collection, free from these boundaries”. Masullo’s fabrics are very rich and sophisticated; silk in various qualities, muslin and satin, elegant classic stripes. Everything made to embrace your body and melt in the next art-immersed dream….

We can’t say that Ginna Lee lacks imagination, perhaps this is one of the most innovative projects I’ve seen recently, she used the memory foam for a textile project in which every gesture becomes a memory shape projected on the body, a sign of the touch, a mark of emotions experienced. If we hug someone, we’ll keep the memory of that gesture even after it has finished, but for how long? Unfortunately, only for a few seconds (this is of course my personal and romantic view of this work). Memory foam is a polyurethane material with high memory density and pressure sensitive to the shape of a body pressing against it.

Although it’s four weeks I’ve not been around the city (I’ve been resting by the sea to regain energy and be ready for the 50th Milan design week), two days ago I ended up attending an opening in Corso Como 10, my italian favourite concept store. It was actually the vernissage of another happening held in the first floor of the stunning shop (a design exhibition I’m going to talk about in the next weeks).

When new products arise in the fashion field, it’s always a gamble, you never know how long the products are going to last, but this usually doesn’t happen if the design is simple and clear, easily recognizable by all. For many people the first inspiration of life is probably to travel and have free time, but if you meet the Volta Footwear group, run from the creative collective 247, you know at a glance that the passion that moves their projects is just defined in their logo: 24 hours for 7 days… of work? Such tireless guys!

Intimate elegance for smiling people.
Beautiful dandies reading books with nonchalance in the dark atmosphere of the Library, or dancing to Egyptian nostalgic notes together with the guests for one of the events I attended during Pitti Uomo in Florence .
The Men’s collection was featuring “happy” yet polite oversize scarves, with the typical floral prints, mixed and matched over tight tailor made jackets in precious fabrics, over comfortable and larger pants. Everything was warmly coloured in a palette which invoked an oriental taste.
